While contemporary shorts often emerge as truncated derivatives of trousers — reduced in length, simplified in structure — this piece follows an alternate lineage. It draws closer to the architecture of pleated lower garments: forms that create volume not through excess fabric, but through controlled folding and release.
The A-line silhouette is defined by a wide, knee-length cut, held away from the body. This distance is not incidental. It is produced through integrated pleat structures that open from the waist and extend vertically through the leg. These folds operate as both structural and kinetic elements — containing volume at rest, releasing it through movement.
Pleating carries a long material history. From early hand-folded linen garments in ancient Egypt to industrially set pleats in modern tailoring, the technique has consistently mediated between control and fluidity. Here, that lineage is translated into a contemporary short form — where each fold holds memory of compression, yet remains responsive to the body in motion.
The waistband is clean and minimally interrupted, allowing the volume below to articulate without obstruction. Side entry pockets are embedded within the seam architecture, maintaining continuity across the surface while preserving function. Belt loops introduce optional structure — enabling the wearer to further define or destabilise the waist.
Fabric selection reinforces this system. A mid-to-heavy weight cotton blend provides sufficient density to sustain the pleated form, preventing collapse while retaining breathability. The surface registers light unevenly — edges of folds catching highlight, inner planes receding into shadow — producing a constant shift between flatness and depth.
Colour sits within a restrained register — deep olive-brown, positioned between organic earthy tones and industry. It absorbs light rather than reflecting it, allowing the structure of the garment to remain primary.
These shorts do not operate as a casual reduction of trousers. They function as a reconfiguration — where volume, fold, and structure are recalibrated into a shorter form.
