In the years following the first wave of the pandemic, Wuhan’s underground nightlife began to quietly reassemble itself — small warehouse parties, improvised club nights and DIY raves circulating through private networks and temporary spaces.

The city has long sustained a kind of unofficial cultural infrastructure. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, bands like SMZB, formed in Wuhan and led by frontman Wu Wei — a central figure in Chinese punk — emerged from a network of DIY clubs and bars in Wuchang, helping shape the backbone of the city’s underground music culture.

This shirt carries something of that atmosphere. The distorted portrait appears almost like a degraded photocopy or low-resolution club flyer, recalling the visual language that often circulates through underground scenes: grainy graphics, scanned images, faces caught somewhere between presence and disappearance.

The print sits deliberately unresolved, closer to a ghosted transmission than a polished image. In the same way early rave culture relied on hand-to-hand flyers and word-of-mouth circulation, the graphic reads like an artefact from an ephemeral cultural network.

Styling follows the same logic of movement: wide denim, cargo shorts, utility straps and headphones — the small infrastructure of bodies navigating cities after dark.

Not a graphic tee as statement, but as trace — a fragment from the unofficial cultural systems that continue to emerge in cities like Wuhan long after the music stops.

Named with reference to Hankou, one of the historic river port districts of Wuhan and a long-standing hub of nightlife and youth culture.
