Cartographic Transit Cargo Shorts in Charcoal

Cartographic Transit Cargo Shorts in Charcoal

The Transit Cargo Shorts offer a utilitarian form derived from military necessity, reworked through proportion and surface.

Cargo shorts originate from early 20th-century military design, first developed within British battledress uniforms in the late 1930s. Large external pockets were introduced to carry maps, field dressings, and equipment—prioritising access, mobility, and self-sufficiency in motion.

By the mid-20th century, these garments transitioned into civilian use through military surplus, retaining their functional logic while shifting context. Over time, cargo shorts emerged as a shortened variation—maintaining pocket volume and loose structure while adapting to climate and movement.

Cut in a washed charcoal cotton, the silhouette falls wide and structured through the leg, terminating below the knee. Volume is controlled through panel construction, allowing the garment to hold shape while remaining responsive to movement.

Large cargo pockets sit at the outer thigh—positioned for access rather than display. Additional slanted pockets are integrated into the front, maintaining continuity of line.

The waistband is elasticated with an adjustable drawcord, allowing the garment to sit variably on the body. Seams are reinforced and articulated, supporting both durability and form.

Surface treatment introduces subtle tonal variation across the fabric, suggesting wear without dependency on it. This is not decoration, but retention of use.

Style Notes

  • Wear mid to low on the waist to emphasise volume through the leg and create a dropped, utilitarian proportion.
  • Pair with a fitted base layer (tank or compact tee) to offset the width and maintain vertical balance.
  • Allow the hem to sit just below the knee with scrunched socks and low-profile footwear to anchor the silhouette.
  • For a more structured read, style with a belt through the drawcord waistband, introducing tension between softness and hardware.
  • Layer with oversized outerwear to extend the line, or keep the upper minimal to emphasise the garment’s architecture.
  • Pockets are positioned for access—use them to carry weight and shift the way the fabric falls.

Care

Improper care may damage the garment.

Please carefully follow the care instructions. New garments may carry a slight fabric odour — this will dissipate after washing.

Please wash before wear. Turn garment inside out before washing and drying. Hand wash recommended. If machine washing, use a gentle cycle.

Dot not bleach or use harsh detergents. Do not wring or scrub aggressively. Do not tumble dry. To prevent fading, wash at temperatures below 40°C. Dry in shade. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
