A work trouser constructed through reorientation of traditional utility pattern blocks.

The base structure follows a classic industrial trouser block — straight through the hip with a continuous leg — historically developed to maximise durability and ease of movement across repetitive labour. Early 20th century workwear relied on simplified pattern pieces, reducing seam stress while allowing garments to be cut efficiently in volume.

This piece begins from that foundation, then departs through angle and expansion. The primary intervention sits in the pocket construction. Rather than aligning to the side seam, the outer pockets are rotated forward along a diagonal axis.

Built using a bellows construction, each pocket incorporates additional fabric volume through folded expansion panels, allowing it to extend outward when in use and collapse back into the garment when empty. This technique originates in military and field garments, where storage capacity needed to increase without permanently altering the silhouette.

The diagonal placement introduces directional tension across the leg, drawing the eye downward while subtly disrupting the vertical line. It also changes access — repositioning the hand entry point to a more natural forward motion, aligned with the body’s movement.

The leg itself is cut with excess width from thigh to hem, forming a wide, slightly flared silhouette. Unlike traditional flares, which are shaped through panel insertion or graded widening from the knee, this volume is distributed more evenly, allowing the fabric to fall and stack. The result is less engineered flare, more controlled release — a silhouette that responds to gravity rather than imposing form.

Lower leg hardware introduces a secondary adjustment system. Discrete fastening points allow the hem opening to be modified, subtly altering the break and interaction with footwear. This reflects a continuation of utilitarian design logic — garments that adapt to condition, terrain, and use.

Fabric selection reinforces this structure. A mid-weight cotton holds the geometry of the pocket and leg while remaining pliable. In black, surface depth emphasises shadow and volume; in off white, construction becomes more legible — seams, folds, and expansion lines are revealed as part of the garment’s architecture.

Across all elements, the garment operates as a system of load, release, and reconfiguration — where traditional workwear principles are maintained, but redistributed through pattern and proportion.

Styling Notes

The volume through the leg is best balanced with a fitted or minimally structured upper layer, allowing the silhouette to remain leg-driven.

Use the lower leg adjustment to control break — worn open for full length and stacking, or fastened slightly to introduce taper and tension at the hem.

The diagonal pocket construction naturally draws the eye; avoid over-layering at the hip to maintain clarity of line and structure.
