The greatcoat occupies a special position within the history of dress — a garment developed for exposure, endurance, and extended wear in unstable conditions.

Its origins lie in nineteenth-century military outerwear, where long, double-breasted coats were issued to officers and infantry operating in cold and wet climates. Length was functional, extending protection below the knee; weight was deliberate, allowing the garment to hold shape against wind and movement. The double-breasted closure distributed fastening across the torso, reinforcing insulation while maintaining structural stability.

The Ulster Double-Breasted Longline Greatcoat follows that lineage.

Cut in a dense sheep's wool, alpaca, mulberry silk and rabbit hair blend, the coat is engineered to retain form while allowing controlled movement through the body. The inclusion of mulberry silk modifies the surface — softening the handle and introducing a restrained, low-lustre finish. The fabric absorbs light rather than reflecting it, producing depth without shine.

The silhouette is elongated and continuous. Falling below the knee, it establishes a vertical axis that stabilises the body in motion. Volume is measured — avoiding both excess and rigidity — allowing the coat to sit between uniform and civilian tailoring.

The double-breasted front anchors the garment, recalling its military origins while functioning as a structural device. When closed, it consolidates the coat into a single, uninterrupted form.

Composition
Single-faced wool blend with a dense, tactile surface.

Composed of wool, alpaca, rabbit hair, and mulberry silk, the fabric balances insulation with handle. The natural fibres retain warmth while allowing breathability, preventing bulk.

The addition of silk subtly modifies the surface — introducing a low, controlled lustre and softening the rigidity typically associated with heavy wool. The result is a fabric that holds form while remaining pliable in wear.

Texture is present but restrained — absorbing light rather than reflecting it, giving depth without gloss.

Primary fabric: Wool blend - 57.9% sheep, alpaca 5.2%. Mulberry silk 5.1%. Rabbit Hair 5.8%, Polyester fibre 26%

Lining: Polyester fibre 100%

Styling notes

Wear fully closed to emphasise the coat’s original function — a continuous, protective outer layer with a stable, vertical line.

Left open, the structure softens. The weight of the fabric drops through the body, allowing movement and exposing the layers beneath.

Pair with wide leg trousers to extend proportion and maintain a columnar silhouette. Alternatively, contrast with a closer, fitted base layer to sharpen the outline.
